Winter Term Class with Meredith James: Design, Politics & Society
DES 407: Design, Politics & Society is a discussion-based class that offers time to reflect upon and critically analyze how design influences our culture. Timely subjects are discussed. Offered during winter term, the class is hybrid and has scheduled meetings once a week on Tuesday afternoons. Because it is discussion-based, it’s a good counter-balance to studio classes. For more information, please reach out to Prof. James: mejames@pdx.edu

universe [held] by Valerie Yeo Opening Reception!
Come on by the White Gallery (Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 289) THIS THURSDAY at 6:30pm for some free drinks and to be able to meet with Valerie Yeo, the artist spearheading our end-of-fall show "universe [held]". Write a note to add to the project, talk with them about the portrait series, or frankly just stop by to check it out yourself and get a free drink!
“Our hands are one of the most expressive parts of our body. They are integral to our work, our rest, our play, and our connections with other people. They are made from the same elements as earth, fire, water, and air, and as such, a constant reminder of our connection to nature. We use our hands intuitively every day, and amass a colossal and innate wisdom contained inside our skin. This series is an intimate collection of hand portraits belonging to loved ones in my queer, trans, and Black, Indigenous, and Person of Color (QTBIPOC) community. Each pair reflects the unique fingerprint each person reflects in my life. As I was making this series, I was struck by the radiance contained inside each set of hands, and the ever-shifting light surrounding them, a reminder of the abundance contained inside us individually and collectively.”
Valerie Yeo (they/she) is a queer artist, community organizer, educator, and psychologist. Each of their identities informs the others, and are infused into their creative life. They create with mediums including oil and acrylic paint, soft pastel, digital art, and collage. Their work explores creative practice as meditation and intuition.

Junk Journaling Workshop with Kristina Rosgen! AB 260, Tuesday, November 18th 12:45 to 1:30
Join me for a Junk Journaling Workshop that encourages creativity and experimentation! This workshop is part of my Design Thesis project at Portland State University, exploring how tactile, hands-on journaling can help designers break creative blocks and rediscover inspiration. During the session, participants will create their own file folder junk journal using provided materials like stamps, textured papers, and mixed-media supplies. You’ll also complete two short questionnaires about your creative process and allow your finished journal to be photographed for my research.
Look forward to seeing you all there!

Public Agency of Travel Planning for the Overwhelmed
Public Agency of Travel Planning for the Overwhelmed is an interactive art installation created by Simeen Anjum, a social practice artist and international student in the U.S. The project plays with the complexities of visa navigation, borders, and immigration systems through her own interpretation of global travel. At its core is ‘Permission to Leave’, a fictional exit visa that requires individuals to apply for permission if they want to travel outside their country for any reason. By mimicking real-world bureaucracy, the project invites reflection on the often absurd and unequal structures governing global mobility. Catch an interactive performance during the 'Office Hours'!
